Cochin International Airport is the first Greenfield airport setup in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in Civil Aviation infrastructure sector in India as a joint venture with Government of Kerala (13%), Central Government (13%) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) etc. as major shareholders (74%). The airport pioneered the concept of private investment in the airport sector after being incorporated as a public limited company, receiving investments from nearly 10,000 NRIs from 30 countries.
Ever since commercial operations started on 10th June 1999 with International flight to Dammam, Cochin International Airport, has grown rapidly becoming the 4th largest International Airport in India in terms of international passenger traffic in just four years. CIAL recorded a cumulative annual growth rate of nearly 20% in the initial 8 years and thereafter at 12% with annual passenger traffic touching 6.45 million in 2014-15. The airport handles more than 1100 aircraft movements per week. Over 18 International carriers offer direct flights to the Middle East, Singapore, Malaysia and direct connectivity to UK, Europe, United States, Far East & the Pacific region.
Cochin International Airport has the state-of-the-art facilities and traditionally designed architecture unique to Kerala. The domestic terminal is spread over 1,20,000 sq. ft area and has a per hour handling capacity of 400 incoming and 400 outgoing passengers. The international terminal is spread over 478,000 sq. ft with separate gate-holds and distinctly separate arrival & departure areas handling 1200 incoming & 1200 outgoing passengers.
CIAL, has a self contained cargo village comprising of 70,000 sq. ft of International cargo, 40,000 sq.ft domestic cargo with annual handling capacity of over 100,000 MTs. 25000 MT storage area for perishables.
The Airport is strategically located with easy access to all three National Highways passing through Kerala (NH 47, NH 17 and NH 49). The main Railway line from Kanyakumari to Delhi is adjacent to the airport and it is situated between Alwaye and Angamaly Railway Stations. The Cochin Sea Port, one of the biggest in the country is also situated close by. The Cochin Airport serves as a vital link in International trade, travel and tourism. The Airport has been planned in phases on a modular basis to suit future requirements and also to minimize the initial investments so as to generate revenue at the earliest possible time. By integrating connectivity with road, railway and port, the Airport is an unique integrated transportation model.
With equity participation from the Government of Kerala, industrialists, NRIs, Financial institutions, Airport Service Providers and the public, the Cochin International Airport Limited is considered as a model enterprise international airport first of its kind outside the ambit of Government of India in the history of Civil Aviation. The airport has received several awards and honors for their operational efficiency and best performance.
