Established in 1948 on 13th day of June, the inborn name of the Association was ASSAM HIGH COURT BAR ASSOCAITION. Association was known by this name until 1971-72 when it got its new name as GAUHATI HIGH COURT BAR ASSOCAITION. Today, the Gauhati High Court Bar Association is considered to be one of the premier and leading Bar Association of the Country having membership of around 2500 Advocates including Honorary Members and Life Members.

The Bar Association has produced some of the great Judges, Lawyers and Jurists. This Association has given the Country several Chief Justices of High Courts, Judges and Advocate Generals of the seven States of North Eastern Region.

The Association was formed on 13th day of June, 1948 with its erstwhile name under the Presidentship of Late Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and Late K. Bora as its Secretary. The first meeting of the Association was held on 13.06.1948 attended by twenty nine leading Advocates of Gauhati who unanimously resolved to form this Association and constituted an Executive Committee amongst the Advocates present, to manage the affairs of the Association. Thereafter many renowned Advocates graced the Association and served for the benefit of the Association in the capacity of President and Secretary and as Executive Committee members.
It is a matter of pride for the Association that our first President Late Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed had been the Advocate General of Assam, Minister of the State Govt. of Assam, Central Cabinet Minister until his elevation to the highest post of the Country as the President of India.
