The Department of Clinical Neurosciences is unique in its own sense, as it is an alloy of various clinical and non-clinical departments of the institute. PhD in Clinical Neurosciences, the major course offered by this department, is first of its kind course in the country. It was started in the year of 2006 at the prestigious National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), and the virtual department of Clinical Neurosciences was created in January 2013. This is a 5 years medical scientist-training program, fully funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi under the Talent Search Scheme MD-PhD fellowship.

The prime aim of this course is to train the medical doctors in the field of medical research and to absorb them later in the scientific cadre of the country.

Each year, five MBBS graduates are selected through a highly competitive national entrance examination held in the month of May-June. These students are given freedom to decide the neuropsychiatric specialty they want to work, after completion of their compulsory clinical rotations in NIMHANS. Students get both advanced clinical and laboratory training in their respective fields of interests.
