The Escola Medico Cirurgica da Goa and was established in 1842 during the Portuguese rule and renamed as Goa Medical College in 1963. It is one of the oldest Medical College in Asia. The college is under the Goa University since 1986 before which it was under the Bombay University. Goa Medical College Hospital which now has its headquarters in Bambolim has a long tradition of providing quality services to all sections of the society. The Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (Bambolim) the TB and Chest Disease Hospital (St. Inez), The Rural Health and Training Centre (Mandur) and the Urban Health Centre (St. Cruz) form part of the Establishment. The Medical College besides striving to achieve excellence in patient care, has been instrumental in training number of medical professionals who are providing yeomen services to the people in Goa and abroad. The vision of this institute is to impart quality medical services to the all sections of the society and further improve the health scenario of the State. Goa Medical College is the successor of the Escola Medico Cirungica de Goa established by the Portuguese in the year 1842 and thus one of the oldest Centre of Medical Education in this part of the world.
In the year 1963, this Medical School was upgraded as Goa Medical College, attached to the Bombay University and later in the year 1983 affiliated to Goa University. This is one of the prestigious institution of the country, recognized by the Medical Council of India, admits 100 students for undergraduate M.B.B.S. Course, while 72 Post - Graduate are admitted every year. The Goa Medical College Hospital were initially operating from Panaji and Ribandar, shifted to Bambolim in the year1991, has presently 1000 beds, whereas 80 bedded TB and Chest Disease Hospital functions from St.Inez, Panaji. Similarly, a 20 bedded Rural Health and Training Centre is situated in Mandur. The entire complex at Goa Medical College, Bambolim is spread in an area of 11,34,798 Sq Mts.
